The following is a list of Seminars taught by Richard over the early years of the NGH Annual Meetings:

1989 - #602 - Business Applications of Hypnsosis:
The challenges facing the world today demand new modes of thinking and acting.  Futureshaping Technologies (started by Richard) is an organiations that believes the business community -- because it already has a multi-national, global perspective -- is in a unique position to spearhead the transformation of global markets.  Communication is the thread out of which the fabric of business is woven.  Successful business executives understand how to effectively influence others in the direction of growth as well as how to effectively use self-hypnosis techniques to enhance their own skills.  Such individuals energize their sphere of activity by accessing a passionate rapport with the higher purposes of their organization.  They act with the necessary committment to a common vision of a better world through better business.  Every sales person, everyone in business, has the fantasy of being "absolutely mesmermizing".  When we meet such a person, we are inspired and energized.  Learn sensory acuity, rapport skills, probing skills and how to access peak performance in order to inspire and energize yourself and others.  As a by-product, your health, prosperity and spiritual well-being will all be enriched.

1991 - #112 - The New Holographic Hypnosis:
(This) session will begin with an examinationof Dr. Karl Pribham's Holographic Brain Theory.  Learn how mental images are recorded, stored and retrieved by the mind.  Using the metaphor of the brain as a human bio-computer, learn how these tapes have an influence on the quality of our lives as well as how, during trance state, belief systems can be programmed.  Brief overview on how to focus attention during and after trance.

1991 - # 208 - Usining Holographic Hypnosis:
One of the most powerful tools a hypnotherapist can help activate is Lucid Dreaming, i.e., waking up inside your dreams so dramatically it is as real as "awake".  In 1985, Dr. Stephen LaBerge of Standfort University proved scientifically that it is possible to be awake and aware in your dreams, even entering the dreams of others.  It is possible to bring this preconscious control using Holographic Self-Hypnosis, which teaches that "attention is the prime mover of consciousness/life force.  What ever attention is placed upon expands".

1993 - #3109 - The New Hologrpahic Hypnosis - Futureshaping Skills Based on Recent Scientific Breakthroughs:

  • Discover how the mind records, stores and retrieves mental images (holograms);
  • Learn how holograms impact the quality of your life; and
  • Learn Dr. Pribram's Holographic Brain theory as applied to hypnosis

Richard A. Zarro, creator of the award-winning Holographic Hypnosis theor will begin with an examination of Dr. Karl Pribram's Holographic Brain Theory.  You will learn how mental images (holograms) are recorded, stored and retrieved by the mind.  Using the metaphor of the brain as a human bio-computer, learn how these tapes have an influence in the qualityi of our lives, as well as how, during trance state, belief systms, can be de-programmed.  A brief overview on how to focus attention during and after trance, putting at your fingertips simple methods for tapping into tremendous hidden resources and personal potentials.

1993 - #4218 - Superwriting using Holographic Hypnosis - How to Achieve in Writing Poetry, Fiction and Non-Fiction With Trance States:

  • Learn to access peak performance states for writing;
  • Learn to use your "internal writing crew"; and
  • Break through creative blocks.

Learn to utilize both the right and left hemispheres of your brain to access your peak performance and state of excellence in the field of writing from an award-winning writer with 25 years experience.  Neurolingu-istic Programming and Holographic Techniques will enable you in the conception, planning and rapid execution of writing projects.  Richard Zarro had taught creative writing for the National Endowment of the Arts Creative Program of New York and was a winner of the Doubleday/Columbia University Creative Writing Award Fellowship.  As Marce Proust once said, "To write that essential book, the only true book, a great writer does not need to invent it ... since it already exists in each of us, but merely translate it.  The duty and task of a writer are those  of a translator".  Learn how to use your "internal writing crew" to write for you at night during the dream state and have the delightful experience of translating the "finished text" the next day.  The writing trance is an invaluable tool and fun.  Also covered are how to overcome creative blocks, how to achieve effective characterization, dialogue and pizzazz in your writing.  Excellent for the novice or the intermediate/advanced amateur writer of fiction or non-fiction.

1993 - #324  - Leading Edge Hypnosis - presented in conjunction with Ormond McGill, Michael Ellner and Richard Zarro.
Transforming Techniques for Personal/Global Change
:
New research in emerging illusion-shattering paradigms make it a must that you learn what is now the Leading Edge of Hypnosis.  In this course you will learn the techniques that are shaping the future of hypnosis.

Amongst His Gifts Is Picture Two of his Photo Album -- Polaroid of His Soul/Energy

Richard was many things to many people.  Besides the standard role of son, brother, friend, father and the like, his role shifted to fit the need of the circumstances and the individual involved as he remained true to his tool and mirrored and matched the other individual and then led.  In addition to this, he personally was an artist in several media, a writer of novels, children’s stories, poetry and then technical books in his area of expertise (hypnosis and communication skills).  He won multiple awards for Holographic Hypnosis (which was his personal brainchild and registered trademark) and widely taught the tools of Holographic Hypnosis and of Futureshaping.

I’d like to take a few minutes to start the story of Richard’s legacy with the story behind the second photograph in his photo album.

The photograph you see on this site and on my personal web site behind the friendship section was taken on October 17, 2003 over nine-and-one-half weeks after Richard’s soul departed his physical remains at 23 Easton Lane, Woodstock, New York (Upstate New York State in the northeastern United States for those of you who are unfamiliar with the area) on August 12, 2003.  Richard’s physical remains were cremated after his funeral in
New Jersey.

For reasons at the time not clear to me, as I was nearing the drive to Easton Lane from where I lived approximately 55 miles to the northeast of Richard’s, on the afternoon of October 17th, I did not feel the customary emotional upset as the car approached the turn off which I had felt in the intervening weeks since mid- August.   The only other occupant of the car was Dice, my adopted companion and aged cocker-spaniel.  I remember commenting as much to him as to myself that I wondered why I was suddenly reacting in this manner.

As I drove in the circular driveway and around back to park the car, it became obvious immediately.  There were the few remaining items from inside the ouse placed on the “back porch”, on the other side of the house from the road and some of the items such as a lamp belonging to my mother were outside on the lawn, placed there by some unknown person.  I had received no telephone call from anyone. There were some items from the house that were totally missing.  The locks on the house doors, which I had changed by a locksmith, had been changed again. I could not get access to the building that had been my “second home” for the past few years.

The photograph I included as photo number two on this site was taken with a basic Polaroid camera which  allowed only the most general adjustments and the flash was set off automatically by the camera.  This particular photo was taken of the office like those of all the other barren rooms, now devoid of human inhabitancy and I had thought the absence of  Richard.  The photos  were my proof that the house had been emptied of its contents should there be any question later in time.  The first photo of the inside of the house was taken from the porch into the living room and then others were taken in an orderly manner with the walk in closet, bedroom, etc., the office, the waiting room and finally what we called the client room.

As the photos developed via the Polaroid process, one of the ones taken of the room where Richard worked one on one with clients teaching them Holographic Hypnosis, Futureshaping and in some cases doing a holographic cleaning to remove adverse emotional tags to an event or events in that client’s life.  Literally hundreds of people passed through those doors from near and far, including from overseas as Richard was internationally known for his expertise.  At any rate, it was obvious as that photo developed there was a “solid” white figure standing across from the sliding glass doors waving apparently to the visitor taking the picture.  The person waving was not recognizable as there was no face to be seen, let alone recognized.   That was the only human figure that could be seen in any room.  The figure was wearing pants as opposed to a skirt or dress.

It was not until several weeks later that I first realized the true gift given to me that day by Richard.  As I was going through the numerous photographs taken of the premises since August 12th, I found the Polaroid as you see it on both this and the link site.   There was “Richard”, clearly seen and recognized by me and many others in the photo, coming from the “tunnel” talked about by Raymond Moody in Dr. Moody’s writings about the near-death experience.  It did seem to be incredulous and it still does.  After all, his body was cremated in mid-August.

I had been asked by Richard for reasons I only partly understood inasmuch as he had certain things he wished to accomplish to provide him with personal assistance the last few years of his life as his health was deteriorating in an escalating manner and the need was increasingly apparent that he needed to accomplish certain tasks.  His time of the end of this lifetime was unmistakably and with increasing rapidity approaching.

The day I went to get a copy of the death certificate to file the necessary court papers, the Town Clerk mentioned to me that Richard had been in shortly before and how terribly ill he appeared to her at the time.  I remember on another occasion noting the same thing.  What we, and how many others unknown to us, saw in Richard was what used to be referred to as the "death hue" as his time of physical death was becoming increasingly imminent.

In declining circumstances, Richard had mentioned a few times to me “what if he did not survive to leave” the house he had built many years prior.  It was not my place to push many of these private issues with him.  I just made mental note of what he said and knew it could well happen although I didn’t understand how he could say this with such assurance.  Although I was uncertain in my thought processes, he never answered my mental note of the question which was unlike his prior habit.  We had become good friends and had learned the value of each other as human beings.  However, the closest Richard ever came to elaborating on his “what if I don’t survive” was to tell me on several occasions he "knew how to come back afterward" (we were talking about physical death issues at the time) and intended on doing such if necessary.  I somehow knew in ways that I cannot explain this was true and that he was not talking about reincarnation.

Always the consummate teacher, one of Richard’s desires could well have been we all learn something from his death as so many did in life.  With that wish in mind, I have shared with you the photograph of his energy and story behind it.  I offer this on his behalf as proof to me and many others the essence, or what some call the soul,  which is truly each of us survives the end of physical existence as we commonly know it.  What a truly remarkable gift.  Here is proof of what we had been taught since early childhood to accept on faith and belief.

What a truly remarkable legacy of this being and how great his love for me and for each of you that he provide this information for all of us to learn and grow.  What a sense of peace this brings to each of us if we accept its message.  To those of us who bear the sorrow of loss, what a gift to all who must walk that sorrow and eventually our own physical demise.  That any mortal could and would do this!  Along with his many other legacies, this perhaps is his greatest gift to those of us still "left" on this plane.

=======

The waving "being" photo was accidentally given to one who was given a copy of Richard's Enchanted Mind text so I do not have it to share with you.

I have added a second photo taken at Easton Lane a couple of weeks before photograph #2 in his photo album on this site.  This photo is not as clear on the Internet as it is in the actual photograph due to constraints in size of the photographs you see displayed here.  I will work at correcting that within the given constraints of the site over the next few weeks and repost it.  In this photograph there are two images of me.  Richard is shown in professional attire "in front of the image furthest to the left as you look at it" with his head over my heart area.

Richard "appeared" on three occasions at 23 Easton.  The third is to Dice and they "went for a run", remarkable when you consider that Richard prior to his physical death could hardly walk.  Animal apparently are much more sensitive and I have no idea how Richard got Dice to let me let him go out so this "run" and the very exhausted dog could convince me and others that this had actually occurred.

His orb (energy of the same bright, shining dense white light that was the waving figure photo) came here one night to prompt my sending photo(s) to the head of IACT to post with the obituary in the "Unlimited Human" magazine.  I had not in my grief been able to deal with the photos which I had been given.  However, he wanted it done and knew if I set my mind to it, upsetting though it was to me, I could accomplish this.  He came in over my left shoulder as I lie on the couch, apparently having woken me up as he approached and stopped over the box of photos.  I cheerfully and confidently said "Hi, Richard" and asked if he came to prompt me dealing with the photograph to IACT for the magazine.  He tipped, as one one tip a hat, to indicate yes and like a space ship going warp speed, he left.

He has also appeared in "human form" on several occasions during the day here as a little boy both inside my living room and running from west to east outside on the lawn between the house which I rent and the landlady's house the other side of this large lawn.  The last time he came, I sensed that someone was reading the computer monitor over my right shoulder.  There is no one else here as the dog has transitioned on also.  When I looked back, he playfully peeked over my right shoulder from standing directly behind me.  He was in professional attire (suit and tie).  That was the last time I physically saw him.  I must get on with his professional legacy of manuscripts and teaching tools.  To that end, I am hoping to find someone who is reliable to assist with the typing and have let him know such is necessary.
===============

In a telephone conversation with well-known medium and author John Holland, I asked John about these appearances.  To my frustration he told me that I was way beyond his training courses in "awakening your intuition" and "introduction to mediumship".  I felt I needed to attend the latter in particular.  In fact, assured John, most people "would kill to reach your level of attainment".

I also had a "reading" by a medium in Texas who incredulously told me Richard said he "talks to me all the time".  Yes, he does.  I only have to be open to what he is saying.  He has never steered me wrong regarding what is going to occur and has provided other assistance as needed.

Richard is a truly remarkable being and continues teaching to this day.  His love for his gifts and us, especially in my instance, remains proof and a shining example to us all.

An "aha!" moment

As I sit here scanning family photographs for both sides of the family going back to my great-grandparents, I of course access memories going back to my grandparents, the earliest timewise up-close generation I have individual known recall for.

I remember my maternal grandmother cooking on a wood stove with photos of the Roberts family homestead and grandmother Sadie. Most vivid of my memories are of the farm animals and of the huge kitchen.  I remember the crank telephone where you asked the operator to connect you although "less countryfied" we had a dial phone at home.

Most vividly, I can recall her cooking especially when making anything with apples.  As she peeled the apples, including crab apples which we had picked for her the previous day from the trees that lined a nearby hay field and her placing the apple skins on the burning wood stove with the attendant smell of the apples permeating the house.  I am transported back through time in my mind to my early childhood days as if physically there again.

Since studying with Richard in the early days (1994-1995) of our association, I have long been aware that what I am actually doing whenever I smell apples cooking is opening that hologram of grandmother Roberts cooking, the smells and eventually the tastes, rehearing the laughing interchanges between the generations, seeing my surroundings as if I am actually there, the joy and personal warm of compradarie felt and sense the role these memories have had in making me the person I am today over half a century later.

September 5, 2007 would have been my parents 71st wedding anniversary with their wedding picture being emailed to friends around the internet as was my brother in the rocking chair that was made for Grandmother Roberts by her father when she was very young and I'm able due to the many childhood memories of me in that chair imagine the pleasure and the many happy hours its use gave to her as it did to my sister, brother and me.  Ah, that sense of connectiveness to the days long past.  Also sent was a photo of me at an early birthday with rapture and nievete as I behold my fourth birthday cake with its lit candles.  Of course, life has changed how I behold the events unfolding.  Yet a piece of that wonderment still linkers.....

Why, you ask, do I write this about me as a tribute to Richard Zarro?  As a student, I learned from him the mechanics of what occurs as we turn our attention -- either deliberately as in sorting and scanning old photos or inadvertently because the memory is opened as we address a hologram of apples cooking and revist grandmother's kitchen those many days as I participated as an early elementary school age child where I learned about family and traditions.

I also learned from Richard about holograms and their characteristics in the group certification training with Richard and Pat Koenig and the many, many hours of private work with him as I learned a multitude of other generalities about incarnating on this planet of both individual memory and memories of the species as a whole.  (and came to learn that such are memories are true not only  of the human race but all who live here) I didn't always understand what was being taught at the time ......

I do, however, have the "aha" moment of realizing that what Richard taught me helped me to understand what was occurring.  More importantly, I have come to learn the experience of accessing holograms is the mechanism which knowledge does not detract from the experience and only adds a new dimension as I continue to scan photos of people and places important to my roots.

Thank you, Richard, for giving me this new perspective on life and family of which I write here.  Your gifts continue to live on and enhance life for others long after the fact!

The Enchanted Mind

From the Dean of American Hypnosis, a published statement
Richard A. Zarro, R.H., C.I.. is a Certified Hypnotherapist and scientist.  He is the president of Futureshaping Technologies, Inc.  The name of his company well describes his work in the field of Holographic Hypnosis, which presents a quantum leap into the creative use of the hypnosis of the future combined with the computer technology of today.  Its advancement in the science of mind will take us into the 21st century.

Hardly more than ten years back, hypnotherapy was little known as a profession.  There were very few professional hypnotherapists.  Today it has proved to be a major breakthrough for re-educating the mind for successful living.  There are hundreds listed in the Yellow pages of every phone book of every major city in the country -- not only in America but internationally.  Schools both worldwide and in the U.S. provide expert certified training in the field.  Conventions of hypnotherapists are held annually.  Richard Zarro is one of the leaders, and he shares his expertise with you to improve your life in every way.  He is one of the first to develop a standardized method of hypnosis in the world.

We are currently living in what has become known as the "Computer Age".  Computers are everywhere serving man's needs, and the technology of mind control advances in direct ratio to computer technology, for mind via the brain is a biocomputer ever there for you to operate for your personal use.  Your personal biocomputer is greater than any electronic computer ever designed.  The potentials of your biocomputer for successs in the world are boundless.

You are what you think.

Mind and brain work as a unit.  Mind is a process for producing thoughts and thoughts are things.  Thoughts are forms of energy.  Your brain functions as a communication device that manifests your thoughts, via the wonderful mechanism that is your body in three-dimensional space.  But, in actuality, space is not limited to three-dimensions.  It is multi-dimensional, and when you know how to fully use your potential of the mind you can advance even beyond the physical world into realms of direct creativity.  It is the way of the Universe and man is a minature of the Universe.

Ormond McGill, Ph.D.
1995

Why Hypnosis

It was the end of his junior varsity wrestling season and he walked up to the coach and asked when tryouts for next year's varsity would be held.  The coach turned to him and said, "Don't bother coming out".  The words struck like a blow.  To a skinny, non-confident sixteen-year-old who had lost every match, some in embarassingly short periods of time, it was devastating.

Little did Richard know then that those five words would change his life.

He was a sophomore at an all boys Catholic Prep school.  His grades were average although he longed to make Honor Roll.  His sports performance was horrid.  His self esteem was low and his self image, based on the flimsiest of foundation, was easily rocked or toppled by the the slightest failure, real or imagined.  When he arrived home that evening, he was distraught alternating between tears and rage.  His parents were worried and called Dr. William Campbell , a family relative who had established a wide reputation in New Jersey during the 1960's teaching hypnosis.  Dr. Campbell worked almost exclusively with pregnant women who were allergic to anesthethetics and needed hypnosis to control labor pains.

Dr. Campbell came to the boy's home later that evening and offered to give him a "session", ostensibly to "relax" him.  Richard thinks Dr. Campbell had other things in mind, but Richard had no idea at the time.  Dr. Campbell had Richard lie on his bed and had him imagine an elevator descending and the door opening on a beach.  That scene was the last thing Richard remembered.  He was amazed to find out he had been in a "trance" for an hour when he could have sworn he had been imagining only five minutes had passed.

Over the next few days, Dr. Campbell visited Richard's home several times and always before he left he gave Richard a little session.  Within the next few months, he taught Richad how to access the altered state at will himself. Richard says he certainly felt more relaxed but he didn't notice any other changes nor did he make a connection between the amazing things that began to happen to him over the next nine months and his introduction into what Richard termed the "Z-zone".

The "Z-zone" is the state which incorporates the alpha/theta brain wave frequencies.  In this mind state, it is possible to program and deprogram behaviors and perceptions.  In Greek, the letter "z" means freedom.

                                          THE TRANSFORMATION

When school let out that Spring, Richard decided to get a job as a laborer on a construction crew rather than mowing lawns as he had done before.  He had to get up at 6:00 a.m.  The work was constant and at times brutally hard.  Richard was the only teenager, skinny and sensitive to the ribbing and tricks played upon him.  These were disturbing but as his muscles grew, so did Richard's ability to hold his own in a world so foreign to the genteel suburban life in which he was being raised.

For the first month, all he could do was work, eat five large meals a day and sleep.  His hands became calloused and his muscles sinewy.  Addionally, his self-esteem heightened and he soon became "adopted" by the older works who were impressed by the fact that he could take whatever they dished out.  Every night, as he fell asleep, Richard practiced Dr. Campbell's self-hypnosis techniques.  During the breaks at work, he would do a quick five minute "z-zone" to fight the fatigue of carrying cement blocks up three stories of scaffolding.

Richard's desire to excel in sports grew week by week, until finally he asked an uncle who was a physical education instructor help him buy a set of weights and give him instruction on their use.  Richard's enthusiasm and his uncle's supervision began to pay off rapidly.  Between the constant hard physical labor and three-hour intensive weight training during the week, Richard's body began to be transformed.  In retrospect, it was during those nights of free weight sessions that his theory of implanting sugggestions directly into cellular muscle structure of the human body began to take hold.

                                             THE RETURN

In the late Fall of his junior year, Richard showed up for varsity wrestling tryouts.  The transformation of both his personality and physique astounded everyone.  It was even hard for Richard to believe.  He had gained 35 pounds of solid muscle.  He was confident, aggressive, fast and astonishingly strong.

To make a long success story short, during the next two years, Richard was undefeated, setting state records and ended up in the New Jersey State Championship.  He received "Outstanding Athlete of the Year" award.  He placed eighteenth in New Jersey at age 17, was vice-president of the school student council, maintained an Honor Roll average while editor of the school paper.  Richard received seven scholarships for sports and academic achievement.

It took Richard a year from the time he started studying hypnosis to make a direct connection between the sessions with Dr. Campbell using self-hypnosis and the miraculous transformation that took place in his life.  When Richard did make the connection, he was stunned.  This connection sparked in Richard a fire to know more about this power buried within each person, this thing called "the mind".  He began to read voraciously anything to do with hypnsois, mind control, positive mental attitudes, peak performance states, and powerful comunication techniques.

As he looked back thirty years later, it was inevitable that his path, sooner or later would bring him to Eastern mental training techniques and he became an adept student at Hatha Yoga, demonstrating both an understanding and mastery beyond his seventeen years.  Richard's world view and private perception of "reality" was dramatically and permanently altered through several enlightenment experiences/peak spiritual episodes.

                             MIAMI UNIVERSTIY to OXFORD, OHIO

During the mid-sixties, the nation was in unprecedented upheaval.  Richard's private passion for research and knowledge of the esoteric mysteries of life was fed by his studies in pre-med and philosophy, especially a particular course in comparative religions.  He became heavily involved in the anti-war movement, which was not a very popular activity at this famous mid-west university.  His second year, he switched out of the pre-med department and became a philosophy/art major.  He supplemented his income by playing folk/blues music at various cafes in Oxford.

The Summer of 1966, he was drafted.  He filed for exception from service as a Conscientious Objector.  The New Jersey draft board did not recognize his right to that status because he was not a Quaker or Jehovah's Witness or a Buddhist, but had been raised Catholic and participated in violent sports. Richard filed a special petition to the state contesting the ruling based on the theory that there are really only variations on a theme, that there is only one religion and that the foundation is based upon a reverence for all life.

A special board of inquiry was set up and after days of grueling examination, Richard won, becoming the first person in  New Jersey to receive Conscientious Objector status not based on a formally recognized religion.  Richard was 19 at that time.  It was during his research that Richard began to realize that the hypnosis/trance state was an everyday phenomenon used by politicians, religious leaders and advertisers.  Having returned to New Jersey, he was able to continue his studies with Dr. Campbell, learning the basic, formal hypnotic inductions of the time.

                          BECOMING A PROFESSIONAL WRITER

Several crises emerged (such as his 15-year-old brother Gerald, being diagnosed as having terminal cancer) which required he hold a full-time job and suspend his formal studies.  Richard was fortunate enough to get a job as a journalist on the "Newark Evening News", then the fourth largest metropolitan nespaper in the New York area.  He was the youngest peson ever to receive such a position.  It was during the same year that Richard began to write fiction, incorporating theories of parallel universe, alterted states of consciousness, spiritual visions, tantric sex and hypnosis (several years later, this book was to win a literary award).

After Richard wrote a controversial article on the Vietnam war, the newspaper took him off "special features" and put him on the obituary desk, which was used traditionally as a punishment to reform reporters.  He then decided to become a free lance writer, quit his job and over the next several years wrote for such magazines as Cosmopolitan, Saturday Review, Harper's, the Nation, etc.  Many of his poems also began to get published and he started being asked to give poetry readings and display his "visionary" art work at various universities and literary organizations, including a tour of Europe.

Telephone Company builllding in lower Manhattan and offer artists and writers, at a nominal rent, special spaces to work.  There were over 5,000 applicants for 300 units.  Richard's body of work was substantial enough that he was one of the lucky 300 to be awarded a living grant.

It was an amazing place to live and work. His creativity flourished beyond his wildest dreams.  He produced hundreds of lithographs, etchings and poems.  He received a grant from the Brooklyn Museum of Art, taught meditation and self-hypnosis, received a teaching grant from the N.E.A.'s C.A.P foundation to teach poetry.  His first novel, A Time for Silence, won the Doubleday/Columbia University Creative Writing Award of 1971.  Richard was given a Fellowship to Columbia University's Graduate Program in Creative Writing.  It was during his studies at Columbia that he started making the connection between linguistics (written and spoken words) and trance states.

His first book, The King of Numbers, a zen tale for child and adults, was published and in a rewiew by the "Post" it was called the best children's book of the year.  In other newspapers, it was compared  to the classic, The Little Prince.  Additionally, his book of poems, Between the Beast and the Stars, was a finalist for the University of Pittsburg Poetry Prize.

                      LEAVING NEW YORK FOR WOODSTOCK

In 1972, Al Gordon, Ira Friedlander and Richard were asked by Harper & Row Publishers to put together a book/magazine similar to the then best selling counter-culture Whole Earth Catalog.  It was called the The Aquarian Angel, a Primer for the New Age.

Since the Woodstock Festival, Woodstock seemed to be the east coast center for New Age Activity.  People were living in tipis, there were famous communes (Rainbow Farms) and rock stars like Dylan and Joplan recording with Alan Grossman.  Harper & Row rented a house for six weeks for the three (Gordon, Friedlander and Zarro) of them working on The Aquarian Angel.  Being a city/suburb person, it was the first time Richard spent that much time in the country and during that project, Richard fell in love with the Catskills.  He decided when he returned to New York that he would move to the country.  And for better or worse, he did.

                                      SPIRITUAL CRISIS

After a year of marriage, Richard's life was thrown into complete turmoil.  The birth of his daughter also gave birth to the greatest spiritual crisis of his life [he wrote this article transcribed here in 1992].  She was born three months premature and weighed only three pound two ounces.  As if that were not enough she was born with her intestines outside her body (gastrokesis) and the umbilical cord was wrapped around her neck.  His wife was unconconscious due to the heavy sedation.  Various specialists were brought in to examine this little girl who could be held in one hand.  After one-half hour, the doctors gave him their prognosis.  She had two weeks to live.  However, there was a surgeon in upstate New York who was somewhat successful  with his new surgical procedure of returning the intestines inside the abdominal cavity.  The problem was her size.  The procedure had never been done on someone so small. So small in fact, that I.V. could not be used and anaesthesia was out of the question.  It would require, they estimated, sixteen operations in 30 days.  Chances of survival were about 30 percent.  There was also a good chance she would be retarded and/or dead within eight years.

Then they told Richard he had ten minutes to make a decision on this.  He walked out of the consultation room, past the room where his wife lie unconscious, through an exit door and ran outside into the crisp October air.  Looking up, he asked for a sign from the gods, his allies, his spirits.  For the first time in his life, he got no answer.  No shooting star, no voices, no strange clouds in front of a stark moon.  Zero.  When the ten minutes were up, he walked back into the hospital where the attending nurse, Mary, who had been so kind to them, came running up and asked him for his decision.   She held his hands with a pleading grip and he just looked into her eyes and said "YES!"  Mary looked at him, started crying and said told him he would never regret it.  She started running down the hall to call for the helicopter when she stopped, turning to ask "what's her name?"

Her mother and Richard had chosen a number of exotic beautiful names such as Adriadinic, etc.  None of them fit the child in this tenuous situation.  Out of no where, he blurted out "Let's call her Hope."

The next years were a horror ... St. Augustine's "Dark Night of the Soul".  Somehow, through some extraordinary spiritual realizations, he managed to restore his faith.  It took several years until he understood he had been guided all along, although he could not see it through the cloud of his pain and expectations.  At the time of this article, Hope is a smart, beautiful and talented young woman in good health.

For the next seven years, Richard continued writing and started a business called Zen Works, building Japanese meditation spaces and artifical waterfalls designed to put the mind in an alpha/theta brainwave state through visual and auditory senses.

During the Winters when it was impossible to work outdoors, Richard would pick up various writing assignments, the largest of which was a book/magazine (similar to the Aquarian Angel) of "Tools for the New Age" called The Connection, published by Dell Publishers of New York.  He received a grant from the N.E.A. N.Y. and toured the elementary schools of Ulster County (Woodstock and Kingston are in that County) teaching creative writing and storytelling to elementary school children.  During this time, he also wrote his second novel Havoc: A New Age Thriller and its screen play for a six-hour television min-series.

                                                HYPNOSIS

Richard continued research and writing with several more books and projects until 1980 when he began training with Dr. John Grinder, cofounder of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP).  Over the next two year, he was certified as an NLP practitioner using hypnosis.  Over the ensuing year, Richard continued to take advanced course in Ericksonian Hypnosis and began training with others as well such as Walter Sicchort (Institute of Relaxation, N.J.), Ormond McGill, Carol Erickson, etc.

At the time of this article (1992), Richard lived and conducted a hypnosis practice in Woodstock, New York, helping until his retirement in the late 1990's due to health reasons literally hundreds of clients and training several hundred more under the auspices of the International Association of Counselors and Therapists as well as the National Guild off Hypnotists.  He established Futureshaping Technologies, Inc. and the publishing arm of his business, Trans Tech.  Futureshaping Technologies gave seminars and private consultations to large and small businesses in the techniques of advanced communication, telephone skills and excellence systems.

In 1987, FTI bgan publishing "Interface Holistic Review", a newsletter listing his products and seminars as well as other related  activities in the field of transformation technologies.  That same year, he produced and began distribution of audio tapes of a series of seven "Futureshaping" seminars Richard had delivered at Unison Learning Center in New Paltz.

In 1988, Mary Orser and Richard co-produced a series of 12 tapes entitled "Change Your Destiny".  These tapes have a spoken attunement for each astrological sign and special brain-wave-music commissioned and composed for this purose are the first tapes to combine astrology with auto suggestion and bio-computer reprogramming.

Over the intervening years until his retirement in 1998 due to health, Richard continued to work with clients at his practice in Woodstock and for a short time in New York City.  He continued public group training of aspiring hypnotherapists for IACT and the Guild until retirement.    Along with the remaining body of work left for posperity is The Enchanted Mind (a technical book on Holographic Hypnosis and a novel The Story of Hope -- Dear God, All I Want Is a Bellybutton".

After retirement, he continued to work with his prior students upon their request while he wrote and edited existing manuscripts for publication.

As seen elsewhere on this site and on the addres-sing-life.com link shown on the "about him", he continues to teach and train those who seek him out even from the "other side of the veil".
